DEN Featured on Inspiring Communities about Holistic Approach to Equitable Employment
In recent years we have seen an increase in the world’s awareness of systemic racism. However, African Nova Scotians and people of African descent still find it challenging to secure and find meaningful employment. In 2016, Lynn Jones told Robert Devet of the NS Advocate: “In the Halifax North End inevitably the people’s number one concern is jobs, meaningful, well-paying jobs. But to this day, there is not one organization that worries about jobs here in the North End.”
The Diversity Employment Network or DEN, an initiative of Black Business Consulting (a division of Black Business Initiative or BBI) is a social enterprise that partners with employers and job seekers to address systemic inequalities, create safer workplaces, and connect Nova Scotians of African decent with career training and entry- to senior-level job opportunities. DEN is proud to announce their partnership with the Community Sector Council of Nova Scotia to bring about change. Together, their mission is to work with corporations and organizations to increase Black and minority representation in workplaces and leadership roles.
DEN’s Director of Operations, Idy Fashoranti, says that “DEN brings value to organizations by culturally sensitive talent sourcing, development supports and matching, ensuring talent retention”. They have unique access to greatly skilled and qualified African Nova Scotian candidates. Additionally, DEN helps businesses navigate the diversity and inclusion continuum. “We have access to proprietary tools to analyze sensitivity benchmarking and provide step-by-step plans to build cultures where employees thrive,” Fashoranti adds.
This network four-fold service offers recruitment, diversity, and inclusion advisory service, a mentorship program, and board governance training and recruitment. What sets DEN apart from other programs is the drive to help African Nova Scotians succeed within the workforce. The Network will also offer cultural audits, sensitivity benchmarking, and step-by-step plans to build cultures where employees thrive.
